DJ Quik’s son, David Marvin Blake Jr., has been convicted of second-degree murder.

The incident in question happened in 2022 in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey, California, where 33-year-old Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. was shot and killed. According to authorities, Blake fired multiple shots from inside a vehicle before fleeing the scene. The victim was then rushed to the hospital where he later died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The suspect, who was 27 years old at the time, was arrested the next day.

The Los Angles District Attorney’s Office confirmed the verdict to Billboard, writing in a statement: “Blake was found guilty yesterday of second-degree murder and the gun allegations and the great bodily injury allegations were found to be true. He also was convicted of one count of shooting from a motor vehicle and the gun and GBI allegations also were found to be true. Sentencing is set for Feb. 6. He faces up to 40 years to life in state prison.”

The legendary producer found himself in the news earlier this summer when a fan on social media said, “DJ Quik is actually who everyone thinks Dr. Dre is,” to which Quik replied, “Finally. Someone had the balls to say it.” That’s not the first time he’s addressed his friendly rivalry with Dre. In 2022, he said that he felt like he should be as highly regarded and as successful as is West Coast counterpart. “I know it’s early. But I deserve to be where Dre is,” he wrote on X. “I don’t think it’s fair, but I understand why. I’ve never had a machine behind me, that always hurt my friends more than it did me.” Quik was in attendance when Dre got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024.
